She realized that robust psychological support for individuals and their families grappling with serious medical illness is essential in helping them process the ways in which their lives have been profoundly impacted by illness. Dr. Stein’s doctoral dissertation focused on the psychosocial impact of cancer-related infertility in women, and she examined the deeply personal struggles women faced when cancer-related issues affected their ability to conceive.
With this specialization in mind, Dr. Stein pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in Palliative Care at the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bronx, NY. She collaborated with an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, and social workers to address the diverse psychosocial concerns associated with chronic, complex, and/or terminal medical illnesses. Dr. Stein worked intimately with veterans, caregivers, and their families, extending vital assistance in navigating the ever-evolving emotional and physical demands that arise throughout the various stages of illness. During her fellowship, Dr. Stein also received specialized training working with children, adolescents, and their families, as they battled serious medical illnesses at Mount Sinai Medical Center in NY, NY. In addition, Dr. Stein gleaned extensive experience conducting grief and bereavement therapy, as individuals and their families experienced many layers of grief and loss related to illness.
